other facts: Right in a triangle comprised of New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa you will find "The Rock of Polynesia, as the self governing island in free association with New Zealand is called.  The close ties with New Zealand affected the sporting world of Niue the same way it did with Samoa. So you will find among the 1389 Niueans many rugby players which practice all kind of variations of rugby. Especially popular is Rugby Union which is the common variation that is known by most people. The "Tao Niue" which is the nickname of the Niuean rugby union team even won the FORU Oceania Cup 2008 by beating New Caledonia in the final. Seems to be no place for association footballers right? That is wrong. There is a quite big following on "The Rock" for the most popular sport in the world. Their FA was found in 1960. So Niue has one of the oldest associations in Oceania. Beside the fact the first recorded footballing season was in 1985 when Alofi became the first champion. So Club football is also played on Niue. There is the "Niue Soccer Tournament", which is won by Talava most of the time. Other teams are Ava, Avatele, Hakupu or Lakepa. In 1983 Niue sent a national team to the South Pacific Games in Samoa where they lost both games. After that event no more records for Niue as nation are known. Due to the heavy presence of rugby, football had diificult times in the past. The last two years there weren´t any football tournaments on the island but now under new guidance the FA is trying everything to get the ball rolling again. If they will send a team to the South Pacific Games 2011 to compete in football is not sure, but at least there as a glimpse on "The Rock" for football fans.

Nauru Soccer

Football Team Profil
Founded: 1973
First game: 2:1 against Solomon Islands
Biggest win: 2:1 against Solomon Islands
Biggest defeat: none
Most famous Player: unknown
Status: in contact with OFC, but not ready for international competition
Stadium: Meneng Stadium (not built completely)
Most successfull club: Black Brothers (team comprised of the Solomon community on the island), other teams were Police, Comp Phos, Buada Sport, Hospital, Work Force Phos and University
The national sport is Australian Rules Football but also association football is really popular. There were even organised tournaments on the island in which also teams from Kiribati, Tuvalu and other islands did participate in. But since 2004 there is no organised football on the small island due the lack of money, qualified staff and no real stadium to use. There are several sporting fields on Nauru (Denig Stadium, Linkbelt Oval). Both are mostly used by Australian Rules Football teams. The first real stadium was supposed to be the Meneng Stadium. But due the lack of money in the houshold of the Nauruan government the stadium is not finished till this date and doubtful that it will be completed. But Nauru is keen to revive football on the island but the problems are as already described. Their long term target is to join the FIFA-family as they self say.
Their first and till date only known international match against the Solomon Islands team ended 2:1 in favour for the hosts Nauru in 2 October 1994 on Deningomodu. But it is not sure if it really was the national team but it´s very unlikely. There is also a rumor that Nauru played a Kiribati team on home soil. But it seems that the teams of Kiribati as well as the one of the Solomon Islands were just selections of people working on Nauru.
At the moment the Nauruan Olympic Committee thinks about reviving football on the island but they want to check first if there is enough interest in the country.
Did you know?

West Sahara Football Team 2011

Origins (1984–2003)

Many teams had represented Western Sahara or the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic on unofficial matches, being the first known against an Algerian league team as early as in 1984, before the creation of the Sahrawi Football Federation. In 1986, 1987 and 1994, friendly matches were played against Algerian, Spanish and Italian league teams. In 1988, a Sahrawi Republic team played with Le Mans UC 72 in France, loosing 3-2. On February 27, 2001, during the 25th anniversary of the proclamation of the SADR, a match was played in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf Algeria between a Sahrawi Republic team and a Basque Country national football team veterans team. The match was attended by more than 4,000 fans, and was suspended on the second half due to the temperature (38º C), when the result was 2-2.

NF-Board (2003–current)

On December 12, 2003, the Sahrawi Football Federation was the first federation provisionally affiliated to the NF-Board. In 2007, a team representing Western Sahara won the Macau National Football Team by 1-0. On December 23, 2011, the Galicia Official Football team won a SADR team by 2-1 on a match played in Teo, Spain. On December 5, 2009, three Sahrawi representatives participated in the 6th General Assembly of the N.F.-Board in Paris,France.

Official foundation (2012)

On March 25, 2012, Mohamed Moulud Mohamed Fadel, SADR Minister for Youth and Sports, announced the official creation of the Sahrawi national football team, by decision of the own team players, stating that "the reason behind its absence of the African football competitions is due to its non-membership in the Confederation of African Football.
